“I call myself the adaptiveknitter because I believe that adaptation is its own form of creativity and I want to help others get creative with sticks and string. Knitting calms me. It is more than just a hobby or pastime, for me it is a way of centering my mind and gaining a sense of accomplishment. Knitting keeps me connected with a community that is positive, smart, and supportive.”
Hi! I’m Beth, the Adaptive Knitter
I was born with a congenital limb difference in my right arm and hand known as Arthrogryposis. This makes my arm much smaller in size and my hand is curved or hooked. I definitely have less flexibility and mobility than I do in my average-sized left hand.
I grew up in a time where there was no internet, and really no community for people like me. In fact, it wasn’t until very recently (in 2019) that I even met anyone else with the same condition!
My parents are incredible people. They encouraged me to try EVERYTHING and do whatever the heck I dang well wanted to do.
I realized very early on that adaptation was my superpower. My ability to shift the learning curve just slightly and to think just outside the “this is how it’s done” box, created an opening for me to participate in the game. I could hit a ball and catch it just as well as anyone else on the field, it just looked a little different when I did it.
I have translated my talent for “making it work” into an entire philosophy for living. I truly believe that no matter your circumstances, you are worthy and deserve to participate in whatever it is that interests you.
I call myself the adaptiveknitter because I believe that adaptation is its own form of creativity and I want to help others get creative with sticks and string. Knitting calms me. It is more than just a hobby or pastime, for me it is a way of centering my mind and gaining a sense of accomplishment. Knitting keeps me connected with a community that is positive, smart, and supportive.
